Portugal lies in the southwestern Europe and is one of the four countries of the Iberian Peninsula. In the north and east bordering Spain while in south and west bordering Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean respectively. The country's currency is the Euro, which replaced Escudo on January 1, 1999. Its population is close to 10,200,000, with 70% of them residing in the 7 largest cities (Lisbon, Porto, Braga, Aveiro, Faro, Coimbra, Viseu). Country's capital is Lisbon, built at the mouth of the Iberian largest river, the Tagus.
Portugal produces a huge variety of agricultural products, such as citrus fruits, tomatoes, grapes, etc., and is also the country with the largest production of cork in the world. Tourism is an important part of their economy too.
An important part of Portuguese history is the era of Great Discoveries. Explorers such as Henry the Sealer, Pedro Alvarez Cabral, Ferdinand Magellan and Vasco da Gama played a big part in making Portugal a huge colonial empire.
